I attended the Photography and Video year of China exhibition and it was a great event to attend. I was no able to attend on the major opening night, but I got to visit the exhibit after the main event. i loved all of the photography that was pretended at the exhibit, I feel like I got to connect with the people and the culture through the photos because the photos told me a story. The photography was very vivid and it gave me some inspiration in my own photography.

The photography made ,e want to attend china one day and hopefully take some photography of my own someday. I would highly recommend doing another photo exhibition next year.

Year Of China Event "FAIR"

For my year of China I attended the "year of china fair". The fair took place all day pretty much during classes  When I finally got a chance to stop by, I got to see the differences between our the American culture and the Chinese culture.I enjoyed the shirts that were being sold during the fair. I really like the design, but I wish I would have had money to purchase. All of the other stands wer nice to see. but they were not what i expected.

The other stands were nice to go around and look at, but I just had one problem. I wanted to see more stands and a variety. Maybe if more people had participated in the event, that would have been way more enjoyable.
Maybe next year the FYS classes can each plan a booth for the country that is being supported/exposed next year. If all the FYS classes puts in some effort the fair next year can be 100 times more better.
This idea can be beneficial for all freshman because they get to socialize a way more with others on campus. this can get some freshman out of their shells as well.

Then year of China event was overall good; I just feel that there should be more variety and paricipation in these events.

Website Review Blog WWW.Savetheinternet.com.

People have always wanted a free press in journalism. People also have always wanted to have internet freedom. People have created websites that fight to keep those rights. I found a website that is totally behind free press and internet freedom. That website is called WWW.Savetheinternet.com. Their missions to inform people about the power of journalism and how there needs to be a free press. Their most important goal is to save the internet and keep government restrictions off of it.
Savetheinternet.com is all about net neutrality and they want to keep freedom in the internet. Net neutrality helps the keep from the government to stop free communication through the internet. It helps to ward off government restrictions on the internet of any kind.
The members who operate savetheinternet.com are people of various job titles. Many of the members attend many of the government official meetings to keep net neutrality alive and to keep the free press.
The internet is something that all of us should be fortunate to have. We are a very lucky nation because many countries, such as China doesn’t have net neutrality. We are also so very lucky to have a free press because many countries also do not have a free press as well. We are lucky as a nation to be able to speak out on what we feel about the government. Other countries would put people in jail, or even kill people that speak out against the government. If the United States were to lose it’s free press and net neutrality, would be devastating. I am totally behind this cause because I fell that this is something that is very important to our nation. If we don’t have free press and net neutrality, we lose our freedom of speech.

Music Industry

Music has been around since the beginning of time. Music is meant to comfort people who really doesn't have much. Music is so powerful that it was developed into an industry that is huge in the entertainment culture today. The music industry has played a big part in people's lives. They are the ones who sign artist/ musicians, who are usually really talented. The music industry is what singers, song writers, musicians, and more are trying to become apart of.
The music industry used to based on the talent people had and their ability to play and sing. Artist such as Meat Loaf was an artist that wasn't physically appealing, but he had an undeniable talent that nobody can over look.
In today's media it's all about the visual and what we are seeing as viewers. Views look more than they listen. Such as performances in the past have been done live, but for a while now main stream artist now are getting used to lip singing. Lip singing is prerecorded tracks that are played while an artist is performing and mouthing the song without sound. Many singers in today's industry are being auto tuned constantly in the studio so their voices can be sharper. An example of an artist who is very famous for her good looks and a great dancer is Briteny Spears.
The music industry is always trying to change an artist and their appearance in order to fit in with modern day pop culture. A good documentary that goes deeper into the music industry and it's focus on pop culture, that the music should really sound like is "Before the music dies".

Advertising & PR

Advertising is what sells the product that people buy in today’s media. There are many parts to advertising that people should understand. First there are members of a creative team and it consists of three parts that breaks down the creative team. The first part is the copywriter, and they develop the message that is being sent to the viewer. Such as what age group and gender the product is being targeted towards. The second part of the creative team is the art director. The art director design the ad of the product that is being sold. The art director gives a visual identity to the product. They try to visually show the message that is being sent through the product. The third part to the creative team is the creative director. The Creative director is the mediator and they make the final decisions. They mesh together the copywriter’s work and the art director’s work. A good example of an advertising commercial that focuses on herd working people of Detroit.
Advertising strategies has four elements that are very important when targeting an audience. The first element is target audience. The second element is the product concept. The third element is the communications media. The fourth and last element is the advertising message.
Creativity plays a huge part in creating effective advertisements. Many big names in the movie industries are hired to get a creative feel for a good advertisement. The best artist and graphic designers are hired as well. here is a perfect example of a recent creative commercial.

The creative pyramid gives us five steps that advertisers follow into making an effective commercial.
Creative pyramids 5 step- sequence
1) ATTENTION
2) INTEREST
3) CREDIBILITY
4) DESIRE
5) ACTION

Advertising is the reason why people of today are so hooked of the media and products today. For example here is a current commercial that is being shown on today’s media.
The Commercial is a Call of Duty, which is trying to sell a popular video game that is coming out in stores soon. Their main slogan is “There is a soldier in all of us”. They are trying to connect with the gamer and attract more gamer's, by saying that you can be part of that game. They make the viewer’s feel like they are in the game. They make the viewer's feel like they made these games for the people and not just for the money.
Advertising doesn't always have to be in a commercial or on a billboard  Companies pay millions of dollars for their products to be on movies and there is usually a close up of the product. This shows what the protagonist prefers and it helps sell lots of products. The product tells the person if you by this product, you will be just like this character in the movie.

The Movie Industry

Movies have been apart of people's lives since the 1890s. Some our first  motion pictures started out with creations by Hannibal Goodwin "horses in motion". Even Thomas Edison had interest in the movie industry. He formed the MPPC " Motion Picture Parents Company". Edison  monopolized access to film technology for production, exhibition and distribution from 1908-1915. Some earlier film makers were the Lumiere brothers (1895 France), Georges Melies ( the devil and the statue, 1902 France), Edwin S. Porter (the great train robbery, 1903 U.S), and D.W. Griffith (1908-1930 U.S).
There are three major parts of the film industry. The first major part of the film industry is the production aspect. The second aspect of the movie industry is the distribution aspect. The third major part of the movie industry is the exhibition aspect.

Between 1925-1948 there was a huge rise in the Hollywood studio system. There was the "Big Five" or the major film companies. They were Warner Brothers, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Loews (MGM), and RKO (owned by RCA). Then there were the three minors, which were the small independent companies. The three minors are the United artists, Columbia and Universal.  All of the studio's listed collected 45 percent of all national film rental fees. The Big Five studio's produced 60 percent of all U.S feature films. They also produced 75 percent of A list films (block busters). Each of the Big Five also produced 50 movies a year.
Movies have played a huge part in my life. Just like many people movies have given me direction in my life. Movies gives me stories to relate to. I  feel like I have learned many life lessons through the protagonist in a film. The movie "Warrior" has taught me that family is important. Even though you have differences, there is something that connect you to each other. The movie "the Gladiator" has taught me the similar thing about family as well.

Journalism Threatened by The Internet

Since we can remember newspapers has been the headline source of information for the people. The newspaper gives us all of the important latest news. They inform the people on what’s going on in the world, to what’s going on in our daily in our government. Newspapers also tell us things that are going on in our local communities. The World Wide Web gave access to people to be able to do their own journalism without having to print out an actual newspaper. Many of these informative news sites started to take place in blog. Then newspapers and news stations started to use the internet to inform the people.
The movie “Page One” discusses how there is a big decline in the sales of newspapers. This is causing newspaper companies to go out of business because of the internet. The movie mainly focuses on the New York Times and how they have always been thriving in Journalism since they began. One reason why they are still thriving is because they have created a website to where it’s just as informative as the actual paper itself. One journalist from the New York Times stated that “everything is moving to the internet/media. If you can’t get with it, then you can’t move on.” That was one of the reasons why they have kept on being successful. Some of the older journalist were still accustomed to the older practices and still kept that instilled. One of the journalist stated that “sometimes going out and getting the story is just better than just getting a video.” Which is very true and what the internet media has come to now.
Wiki Leaks is an internet news/journalism source of information for the people to view and get the latest news. They are known for posting videos on the internet, which is the opposite of what newspapers, such as the New York Times likes to do.
There are many reasons why the internet can be a great source of news/journalism for the people. Obviously news can be posted quicker by a click of a button. Also more people use the internet every day, rather than picking up a newspaper to read on what’s going on in the world. Also having news on the internet is a way to save money so that paper wouldn’t be wasted.
Journalism is currently slowly declining and the use of an actual newspaper is also declining.

The Walt Disney Company

The mass media is very important to the major media conglomerates. A Media conglomerate is a company that has ownership of many companies in various mass media. Some examples of companies in various mass media are, the internet, television, radio, and more. . Concentration of media ownership is when fewer individuals and organizations are increasingly losing control of increasing shares. The number one media conglomerate in the United States is the Walt Disney Company. The Disney brand is always popping up in mass media because it has its name everywhere. The Walt Disney Company is a great example of a successful Media Conglomerate, because of its success in advertising their many brands through the mass media.
A prime example of a media conglomerate is the Walt Disney Company.  In fact, the Walt Disney Company is the largest media conglomerate in the United States.  Disney owns and operates many companies; which are Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group (film studio). ABC broadcast television network is also owned by the Walt Disney Company. Cable television networks such as ABC Family, ESPN, A+E Networks, and Disney Channel are owned by Disney as well.  The Walt Disney Company also owns 14 theme parks all around the world. It is clear the Walt Disney Company has its hands tied in many categories where mass media is needed.
There is no arguing that the Walt Disney Company is the largest Media conglomerate in the United States. Advertising is what the Walt Disney Company does so well, and that is what keeps bringing them money.  Disney is promoted through the media at a very large scale because it has its name/ brand all over almost every major project. Disney’s much major success came from its films, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney theme parks are also major success because it was promoted through the mass media. A prime example is when major sports athletes win a championship, and during their speech the say that they are going to Disney World. By the athlete saying that it causes viewers to want to go to Disney World; and it brings in more money for the Walt Disney Company. The Disney Channel keeps children glued to the television, and the Disney Company can advertise a product. By advertising the product on the channel, this causes viewers to want what they see.
Advertising through the mass media is what brings so much attention to the Walt Disney Company.  Also the mass media keeps bringing in a great amount of profit to the Walt Disney Company. Disney’s brand is all over, and they are forever growing. There will probably never be a media conglomerate the measures up to the Walt Disney Company.

About Me

Hello my name is Jonathan Flores and I am from New York City. I was born on February 4, 1993.  I am a sophmore at Reinhardt university. I play for the Lacrosse team here and I am a Digital film and video communications major. I an aspiring Photographer and I just recently started my own t shirt company, which is called Visual Interpretations.

The Truman Show

The media plays a big part in telling the people what is real and what is not. Reality TV is supposed to show us a persons everyday life. the MTV hit show "The Real World" made reality TV popular. People were so glued to peoples everyday problems because they can relate to that. In 1998 a Satirical comedy/drama film called "The Truman Show" came out and it showed everyone how reality television will consume our lives in the future. The Truman Show is about a man named Truman (actor Jim Carrey) who was under the spot light  and cameras since the time he was born. Truman grew up his whole life not even noticing that the whole world was watching everything he does from the time he was an infant. as he got older he started to realize that the world he is living is is not what he thought it to be. Like all reality television shows people can tell if a scene is reality or performance. Most Reality TV shows now have a huge element of performance because the directors wants the audience to feel a certain way. Violence plays a major part in what people want to see in reality television.

Super Bowl Snack

This is the dish I made for Super Bowl Sunday. The dish contains Cilantro. Red onions, Tomato, Lime Juice and Salt. I had some hero bread with olive oil on top to go with it. The bread was also broiled in the oven.

Digital Nation (Review)

The documentary [digital nation] was very biased and upsetting to me. It seemed like every scene bashed the youth. The documentary states that we are slowly loosing our intelligence because we are so dependent on the media. It was like our parents were telling us we were wrong, and that we do not know anything.
Every generation does something new that the previous generation doesn't approve of. The way we live out lives will always change, and it will always be harder for the previous generations to approve of that.

Parents and Media

I just interviewed my girlfriends mother(Victoria), and I asked her questions about the media. I mainly asked what she thinks about the media and how she limits it from her kids from the media. Victoria stated that she does not have any negative views about the media. Victoria said that she is all for learning about the media, but she doesn't have anybody to keep her up with the media; because her two daughters are already in college.
Victoria said that while her kids were growing up, she let them jump into the media world, but still raised them in a classic structured home. When Victoria said classic home, she meant that her kids wouldn't stay home all day watching tv. She would have her two daughters run around outside all day and spend summers at grandmas house; rather than staying home all day being a couch potato.
Victoria stated that her daughters are already grown up and she can't really stop then from getting lost in media. Victoria simply feels that she can't stop the media and the rate it's going. She said that she is going to live her life at her own paste.

Stereotypes

The Stereotype that all Asians know martial arts and are all secretly ninjas.

The Stereotype that all native Africans are warriors with spheres and hunt lions in order to protect the tribe.

The stereotype that all spanish people drink lots oh alcohol.

the stereotype that all Mexicans like taco bell.

Moving with the times of technology

When understanding the media and how it works, there should always be a medium between each other. As generations keep emerging, technology becomes more advanced and it makes it hard for the older generations to keep up. This cause the older generations to shut technology out. A good way to get the older generations into adapting with technology is to relate to them in ways they understand. For example, showing them an old tv shoe that they have not seen in many years. Technology is growing at a really fast rate and sometimes it can be really hard keep up.

Media Literacies

Media Literacies is basically the media around us. It's understanding the media around us. Also being able to know how to use our smartphones, laptops and more. If we don't understand or keep up with the media, we will be left behind.

Media can have a great affect on you or a bad affect on you depending on how you use the media.
